Conrail Publication Archives

This page brings together a growing digital archive of historic Conrail publications preserved from my personal collection and made publicly available as scanned PDF documents. These original internal and external magazines and newsletters, including Conrail Inside Track, Conrail Update, and Conrail People, document the railroad’s operations, workforce, and corporate culture from the late 1970s through the late 1990s. Many of these magazines are beautifully illustrated with railroad photography and were written by those who worked on the railroad, offering firsthand insight into daily life at Conrail, major projects, and employee perspectives across the system. This archive grew out of sharing individual scans with former Conrail employees and friends, many of whom had not seen these magazines in decades, and reflects an ongoing effort to preserve and make accessible an important chapter of American railroad history. Enjoy reading through these magazines free of charge.

If you have Conrail publications available for sale or donation, I would be grateful for the opportunity to help preserve them. I’m always looking to fill gaps in the collection below, whether it’s missing issues, special editions, or lesser-known internal publications. My goal is to continue expanding this archive so more of Conrail’s printed history can be scanned, preserved, and shared with future generations of railroad historians, employees, and enthusiasts.

Conrail Magazine 1976 - 1978

Conrail Magazine was published by the Public Affairs Department for employees and families of the Consolidated Rail Corporation. These magazines provide a detailed look at the early years of Conrail, including the introduction of the iconic Steel Wheels on Steel Rails logo. Focusing on the formation and early direction of the railroad, Conrail Magazine offers firsthand insight into the events, challenges, and milestones that shaped the company during the late 1970s, making it one of the most valuable resources for understanding the origins of Conrail. In 1979, Conrail Magazine was reformatted and rebranded as Conrail Inside Track.

Conrail Update Magazine

Conrail Update magazine was published by the Public Affairs Department of the Consolidated Rail Corporation in cooperation with the Sales and Marketing departments and was intended primarily for Conrail customers. The first issue was released shortly after the formation of Conrail in June 1976. Initially positioned as a short, simply formatted newsletter with only a few pages, Conrail Update later evolved into a full magazine featuring multiple full-color pages. Its articles were geared toward current and prospective customers and often mirrored content published in Conrail Inside Track, making the eventual consolidation of Conrail Update into Inside Track in 1990 a logical progression.

Conrail Inside Track Magazine (early format) 1979 - 1990

Conrail Inside Track magazine was launched in April 1979, three years after the formation of Conrail, replacing the earlier Conrail Magazine. Published as a bi-monthly, tabloid-sized employee magazine, Conrail Inside Track served as a primary internal communication tool from 1979 until 1990, until it was reformatted. According to Conrail, Inside Track was established to “report on corporate developments, but in doing so, will focus on Conrail employees and their efforts on the job.” Employees across the system were encouraged to participate by submitting stories and personal perspectives to the editor through the Public Affairs Department at 6 Penn Center Plaza in Philadelphia.

Conrail Inside Track Magazine (late format) 1990 - 1996

Conrail initially had Update magazine and a large-format Inside Track magazine, and they were combined and reformatted beginning with the November/December 1990 issue. Conrail describes the transition below:

“Welcome to Conrail's Inside Track magazine. That's right, Inside Track. Beginning this issue, we're introducing an updated de-sign and some new editorial directions, that we think will make Inside Track more responsive to the needs of our readers, and reflect the progressive mood of railroading as we head toward the 21st century.

We've also combined Update, our former customer magazine with Inside Track. Why? Because we believe that Conrail's customers and employees share a common interest: excellent service.

Our customers want excellent service. Our employees want to provide excellent service. Through Inside Track, we'll highlight the strength of that common interest to create a closer bond between our customers and the Conrail employees who serve them. If you are a Conrail customer who used to receive Update magazine, this is your first issue of Inside Track.”

Conrail Inside Track Magazine 1997 - 1999

In the final years of Conrail, the covers of Inside Track magazine tell a powerful story about the railroad’s transition. During Conrail’s heyday, pride and a commitment to excellence were evident across nearly every aspect of the company. Earlier Inside Track issues featured bright, hopeful, and energetic photography that reflected confidence in the railroad’s future.

By the late 1990s, however, the magazine’s tone and format shifted dramatically. As Conrail approached its breakup, Inside Track evolved from a full-color employee magazine into a more utilitarian newsletter. Between 1997 and 1999, photographs were largely eliminated, and the publication focused on providing updates related to the acquisition and division of Conrail. Issues from this period included letters from the CEOs of CSX and Norfolk Southern, as well as regulatory updates from the Surface Transportation Board.

Uncertainty was widespread among employees, and understandably so. Many non-agreement positions were eliminated during this time (could we be seeing this same situation with Norfolk Southern soon), and Conrail’s long-standing role as a major railroad headquartered in Philadelphia was coming to an end. The redesigned Inside Track reflected these realities, serving less as a celebration of the railroad and more as a vehicle for timely communication during a period of profound change.

Conrail explained the shift in direction this way:

“We know you have a lot of questions about what has happened and what will happen as the acquisition and division of Conrail progresses. That's why we've changed Inside Track's format and frequency. By publishing monthly as a newsletter, we hope to provide more timely information to you and your families about those issues that affect us the most.”
