A railroad frozen in time

The East Broad Top Railroad stopped hauling revenue freight and quietly closed the roundhouse doors.

Walking up to the roundhouse in Rockhill, Pennsylvania, a large number 12 was peering from the darkness within. You question your sanity when going on the property of the East Broad Top Railroad; what decade is this? It’s surreal. A hidden gem in the middle of the state. Seemingly frozen in time.

In 1872, a new narrow gauge railroad was formed in the middle of Pennsylvania to move coal and rock. Its story is fascinating and its collection of steam locomotives and rolling stock have been the subject of many photographers for a long time.

Under new ownership by a nonprofit foundation (founded in part by Bennett Levin, the current owner of former Conrail 4020 and 4021) the railroad will begin to see new life.
