The thing about steam…

So the thing about steam engines is that you can’t help but photograph them.

Watch the crowd. It’s not just rail photographers who stand in awe of steam engines. Most have no idea what the lubricator sounds like or why it’s even there. That’s not the point. Norfolk & Western 611 is a monster. A living, breathing, monster. And I, too, couldn’t look away.

I’m grateful to everyone who has allowed the Norfolk & Western 611 J Class to continue its journey, including the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the 611 crew. Its sporadic operating journey meant that sometimes it laid dormant, like many American steam engines. But not this time. More of my 611 photos by Wes Reminder will be coming in the future.
